Joan Maloof
Founder of the Old Growth Forest Network
Joan Maloof, Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University, founded the Old-Growth Forest Network to preserve, protect, and promote the country's few remaining stands of old-growth forest. She is the author of five books. Her first, Teaching the Trees, was published in 2005, and her second, Among the Ancients, in 2011. Joan spends her time lecturing, writing, visiting forests, assisting private landowners, and supporting local groups trying to protect community forests from development.

“BTGiants: Our Foremothers (and Fathers)”

Clara is a Cultural Landscape Historian who worked for two years as an intern at the Oliver Archives and now has her Masters Degree in Gender History from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. She wrote her dissertation on hegemonic femininity and landscape gardens in Regency Britain. At our lunch, she spoke on founding and early members of the Bird and Tree Club, and the tangible legacy they have left in Chautauqua.

“LESSONS LEARNED FROM A GARDENING LIFE”

Holly is a nationally recognized horticulturist with a rich background in gardens, herbs, and plant conservation. After working in numerous gardens in England, Germany, Holland, and Belgium, Holly was the first Curator of the National Herb Garden at the US National Arboretum in Washington, DC. Most recently, Holly was the Executive Director of the US Botanic Garden, on the National Mall, where she was responsible for all aspects of running the Garden which experienced a renaissance during her leadership.
