Following the Monarchs to Mexico
Speakers/Guides: Jack and Diane Voelker
Location: Smith Wilkes Hall
How can you visit the miraculous monarch overwintering grounds in person? Hear from a couple who has been to Mexico and observed this incredible experience. What are the current conditions at the Biosphere Reserves in Mexico? How have winter storm damage, illegal logging, new threats from mining, and other factors affected the latest monarch population status? Learn the answers to these and other monarch-related questions during Jack and Di's 'tag team' presentation. They are true local monarch experts, longtime Chautauquans and members of our BTG Monarch team. You'll want to take copious notes for this lecture!
Jack and Diane Voelker, who live on 65 acres of land a few miles north of Mayville, NY, are recently retired - but busier then ever! Jack, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, served as Chautauqua Institution's Director of Recreation and Youth Services for over 25 years. Diane, a registered nurse, founded Family Health Medical Services in Mayville in 1982. In 2014, they traveled to Mexico to visit one of the monarchs' winter migration sites and were 'hooked'! They have been keynote speakers at the BTG Life Member luncheon. The Voelkers deep roots in the community having been instrumental in initiating and supporting a monarch project with Chautauqua Lake Central School.
