"Open Wide: Tales From the Caterpillar Ranch"
Speaker/Guide: Lori Stralow Harris
Location: Smith Wilkes Hall
A monarch butterfly habitat in suburban Chicago transforms a group of grandmothers into "monarch mamas" each summer. Hear true tales from Lori Stralow Harris, an artist, author, educator, and butterfly farmer turned caterpillar rancher. Lori owns Salt Creek Butterfly Farm in the greater Chicago area and provides unique, hands-on experiences for people of every age to connect with nature.
Lori opened Salt Creek Butterfly Farm in 2013 to provide her community with more opportunities for backyard nature encounters. Her BFA in painting and MA in interdisciplinary arts have contributed to the farm’s art-in-nature curriculum. In 2015 Lori planted butterfly habitat in a local retirement community and began the popular adopt-a-caterpillar program among seniors. Lori belongs to the Association for Butterflies, and the International Butterfly Breeders Association. Her first book, Butterfly Birthday, was released this year with great response from the Monarch conservation community (and the preschoolers in her Montessori classroom). Lori lives in Western Springs, IL with her husband, Mark.
